French Cultural Program
In May, 1998, The Gateway Brass Quintet was invited to participate in the French Heritage Festival in St. Louis. The organizers invited us to perform a 60 minute program of French Music at the Old Courthouse. We accepted the invitation even though we had never before performed a concert of all French Music. We saw this as an opportunity to expand our repertoire. We also thought that having a large volume of French music would help make our group unique. The concert was very successful and as a result, we were invited to perform at the French Heritage Festival in St. Genevieve, Missouri in May 1999. The program was very well received there also. We then decided it would be fun for us to perform our program for other groups who may be either studying French or have a keen interest in French culture. The program explores the unique qualities of French composition from the 17th through the 20th century. The "Ouverture" of Lully and the "Character Pieces" of Satie and Debussy are but a few examples. The narration provides historical insights into the music and biographical anecdotes about the composers. We would like to come and perform our program for you. It is reasonably priced and partial funding may be available.
